
Hijri–Gregorian Date Conversion Explained: Why Results Can Differ by One Day
Understand lunar months, tabular calendars, crescent visibility, sunset boundaries and how to use a Hijri date converter responsibly.
A Hijri–Gregorian converter can give an exact-looking answer while a mosque calendar shows the previous or following date. That does not automatically mean one of them is broken. Different calendars may use calculated month rules, predicted crescent visibility or an announced local sighting.
The best conversion is therefore a clearly labeled result with a verification habit, especially for worship, fasting, marriage documents and community events.
The Hijri year follows lunar months
Twelve lunar months produce a year of about 354 or 355 days, roughly ten or eleven days shorter than a common Gregorian year. Islamic dates therefore move through the seasons rather than staying in one solar season.
Many civil converters use a tabular calendar with alternating month lengths and leap days distributed through a cycle. This makes past and future arithmetic consistent, but it is a model rather than a record of every local month announcement.
New moon is not the same as visible crescent
Astronomy can calculate the instant of conjunction very precisely. Crescent visibility after sunset is a different question. The Moon's age, angular separation from the Sun, altitude, atmospheric clarity, observer location and optical conditions all matter.
The US Naval Observatory notes that no single age guarantees visibility. Communities also use different geographic scopes and decision rules, so two valid public calendars can label a civil evening differently.
An Islamic date begins at sunset
Gregorian civil dates normally change at midnight; the Islamic religious day begins at sunset. An event after Maghrib may therefore carry the next Hijri date while still sharing the same Gregorian date as the afternoon before it. Record the time and place when converting historical or legal material.
- Use a converter for planning and approximate correspondence.
- Record whether the result is tabular, astronomical or sighting-based.
- Include local time and the sunset boundary for evening events.
- Confirm worship dates with the relevant local authority.
How to cite a converted date
For scholarship or archives, preserve the date exactly as the source gives it and place the converted date in brackets with the conversion method. For future community events, publish an expected Gregorian window and state when the final local announcement will be made.
