How to Perform Umrah: A Clear Step-by-Step Guide

Muslim Post Editorial Desk@muslimpost

A non-commercial Umrah guide to ihram, miqat, tawaf, sa'i, hair cutting, safety, accessibility and official preparation.

Umrah has a clear ritual sequence: enter ihram before crossing the applicable miqat, perform seven circuits of tawaf, complete seven laps of sa'i from Safa to Marwah, then shave or shorten the hair to leave ihram. The simplicity of that outline should not hide the practical preparation needed for crowds, heat, mobility and official access rules.

This guide explains the sequence without selling a package or pretending to replace a scholar, medical professional or Saudi authority. Rules and services can change, so check the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and Nusuk before travel.

1. Prepare before the miqat

Learn which miqat applies to the route and prepare early. Bathe if possible, trim what should be trimmed before entering ihram, pack unscented essentials, and put on the ihram garments in a practical place. Wearing the garments is preparation; the state of ihram begins with intention and talbiyah before crossing the miqat.

Women wear modest normal clothing and do not use the two unstitched garments required of men. Individual circumstances differ, so ask a qualified scholar before travel about menstruation, illness, children, accessibility and any uncertainty over restrictions.

2. Make tawaf around the Kaaba

Enter Al-Masjid al-Haram calmly and follow current access instructions. Tawaf consists of seven circuits around the Kaaba, beginning and ending in line with the Black Stone. It is not necessary to push toward or touch the Stone. Protecting people from harm takes priority over creating a dangerous crowd.

Keep the Kaaba to the left and move with the flow. Make du'a and dhikr without blocking paths. Families should agree on a meeting point in case they separate, and anyone with limited mobility should use the accessibility guidance and routes available at the time.

3. Complete sa'i from Safa to Marwah

After tawaf and prayer when feasible, go to Safa. Sa'i is seven laps: Safa to Marwah is one, and Marwah back to Safa is two, so the seventh ends at Marwah. Follow signs and staff instructions; do not assume every floor has the same entrance or crowd pattern.

Drink water, pace yourself and seek help early if dizziness, chest pain, breathing difficulty or confusion appears. Religious determination does not remove medical risk.

4. Cut the hair and leave ihram

Men shave the head or shorten hair across the head; women trim a small amount from the ends of their hair. This completes Umrah and ends the ihram restrictions. Use hygienic, authorized facilities rather than loose blades in crowded public areas.

  • Ihram before the applicable miqat.
  • Seven circuits of tawaf.
  • Seven laps of sa'i, ending at Marwah.
  • Shaving or shortening the hair to complete Umrah.

Practical preparation that prevents harm

Carry identification, hotel details and emergency contacts; wear supportive permitted footwear outside the ritual areas as appropriate; stay hydrated; and avoid scheduling an exhausting arrival and Umrah with no rest. Check official permit, health and transport information shortly before departure.

If you make a mistake or face an unusual circumstance, ask an authorized scholar or official guidance point. Do not rely on package advertising, viral clips or a generic article for a personal ruling.
