
Zellij Tilework: How Cut Tiles Form Geometric Mosaics
Follow zellij from glazed tile and hand-cut shapes to face-down assembly, mortar backing and the repeating mosaics of Morocco and al-Andalus.
Zellij—also written zillij or zilij—is mosaic tilework built from individually cut pieces of glazed earthenware. It is especially associated with Morocco and the architectural traditions of the western Islamic world. The finished surface may look like a printed pattern, but every star, polygon and border is an assembly with real joints, thickness and tolerances.

It is mosaic, not a painted imitation
Traditional production begins with fired glazed tiles in a limited palette. Craftspeople mark and cut them into named geometric pieces using a hammer and anvil-like support, refining edges so pieces meet closely. A complex panel is therefore composed of many simple shapes rather than one specially molded star.
This is different from a large square tile painted with a geometric design, and from patterned cement tile. Those techniques can produce similar visual effects from a distance, but their manufacture, joints and aging differ. A close view of genuine cut-tile mosaic reveals small variations at the edges and in the glaze.
Why the pattern is assembled face-down
For many panels, pieces are arranged glazed side down on a flat working surface according to a full-size layout. The craftsperson sees the unglazed backs while building the design, so sequencing and pattern knowledge are essential. Once a section is complete, mortar or another backing binds it into a transportable or installable unit. The panel is turned or lifted into place, revealing the colored face.
Face-down assembly helps keep the visible surface flat even when individual tile bodies vary slightly in thickness. It also means that errors hidden on the workbench become conspicuous only when the panel is revealed.
Geometry follows architecture
Star networks, interlaced polygons and braided borders can repeat across dadoes, fountains, floors, columns and courtyard walls. The pattern is not merely cropped at random. Borders negotiate corners and openings, while changes in scale or motif can mark a doorway, basin or central axis.
The Met’s Moroccan Court, made in 2011 by craftspeople from Fez, combines zellij in the lower register with carved plaster above and carved cedar higher still. The arrangement reflects a long-lived western Islamic interior vocabulary. It is a modern museum construction, not a medieval room transplanted intact, and that distinction is important.
How to examine zellij
- Look for individual cut pieces and real joints rather than a surface-printed design.
- Find the repeat unit and the centers of major stars.
- Follow borders to see how the design turns a corner or ends at an opening.
- Notice glaze variation, repairs and replacement pieces.
- Distinguish historical fabric from modern restoration or revival work.
Zellij survives because it is both rule-based and adaptable. Geometry provides a shared grammar, while the hand of the cutter, the palette of a workshop and the dimensions of a particular wall keep each installation materially specific.
